An Unforgettable Story

Lori is a mom of 5 young boys (10 & under). A year ago, her husband Steve was riding his mountain bike on Super Bowl Sunday 2017 around 8pm on Niguel Road & Ridgeway Avenue in Laguna Niguel, CA when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver. Steve sustained severe injures in his brain. He had emergency surgery the same night where they removed a piece of skull to relieve pressure. Steve was at Mission hospital for weeks and then transferred to another facility for additional treatment and care. He has had multiple surgeries and has needed 24/7 care since the accident occurred. A year later, Steve still cannot walk, talk, feed himself, or interact with his family more than blinking once for “yes” and twice for “no”. Steve makes tiny improvements each day, the latest being the ability to move one of his legs a few inches for the first time in a year.  The man who hit Steve was arrested on the year anniversary of the accident, Super Bowl Sunday 2018.

The #1 way to help the family right now is to assist with medical/childcare/living costs

3 months prior to the accident, Steve and his wife, Lori, had their 5th child. Steve was the sole provider for the family. Steve Schenkenberger isn’t just a father, husband, son, and brother. He is considered by so many to be their trusted source of advice, inspiration, mentorship, and leadership. He was an avid surfer and with many miracles, we hope he will surf again one day. To follow Steve’s story, visit Please pass it on.

Steve mirrors his wife’s sign telling him she loves him. Almost a year after the accident, Steve still cannot speak or walk.

Steve is currently at home in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Steve still has a massive road to recovery in front of him. He is going to need SO much time and energy, there’s just no way Lori can not do it all on her own. She needs prayers for Steve’s young boys missing and needing their dad, prayers for trust… knowing nothing of the outcome of Steve having DAI, a severe TBI. Lori needs prayers for support, paying for life with 5 young boys, medical expenses (are already well over $500,000) and that’s just the beginning… Steve won’t be capable of being the financial provider for many years to come….prayers for the reality of this new life when Steve comes back home, the chaos of raising 5 kids, cooking dinners, making lunches, taking them to schools, taking him to therapies, modifying cars for wheel chair accessibility, paying monthly bills, figuring out ways to pay bills, making sure each one of their kids are loved and cared for!
